Music is a valued part of the school curriculum, but there are also plenty of opportunities for pupils to follow their musical passion outside of the classroom.
From individual music lessons to choirs and ensembles, musical life at St Peter's is thriving. Children of all ages enjoy access to music at St Peter's and participation at all levels is encouraged and talent is nurtured. We are proud to be the Choir School for York Minster.
Individual Music Lessons
Individual instrumental lessons in violin, piano and guitar are offered from Year 2, and Year 3 have taster sessions in strings, woodwind, and brass once a week. For those wanting to start earlier, pupils can take up recorder from Reception.
We are lucky to have a wonderful team of highly qualified visiting music teachers, offering over 300 individual lessons each week in piano, voice, flute, recorder, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, violin, 'cello, harp, guitar, drums and trumpet among many others.
Our teachers are hugely experienced in preparing pupils for Music Scholarships and examinations, but primarily to foster a love for music at all stages.

Choir
We are proud to be the Choir School for York Minster. To find out more about being a York Minster Chorister, see our dedicated page here.
Year 2 and 3 combine as a choir who perform throughout the year at various venues and events including the school Christingle Service at The Minster, the St Peter's Whole School Foundation Concert, and Young Voices.
Our School Choirs give many pupils an opportunity to learn and sing an range of music, and joining is encouraged throughout the school.
Our more specialist choirs include the York Minster Choir, Chapel Choir, and the Chamber Choir who sing a varied and challenging programme of music. Alongside this traditional base, we also run Barbershop groups for both boys and girls.
Ensembles
We offer a broad ensemble programme from small, instrument-specific chamber groups such as our Clarinet Choir or String Quartets to larger ensembles like the Wind Band.
We are fortunate to have our beautiful Chapel for concerts and events, and frequently welcome parents and members of the community to performances there, or in the Memorial Hall or Shepherd Hall.
Our Commemoration Service, Carol Services and termly Communion services take place in York Minster where our ensembles have an opportunity to accompany the liturgy in this stunning historical landmark.

Music Schools Facilities
We have age tailored Music Schools across the school, which provide teaching rooms, rehearsal spaces and recital rooms.
We are also proud to provide a recording studio and two computer-equipped teaching rooms.
Tours and Trips
Touring is an integral part of our musical programme for the older year groups, and provides the pupils with fantastic opportunities to perform to a wide range of audiences in some fabulous locations as well as connecting with the culture of other countries through educational visits.
Our tours alternate between European cities and New York with notable performances in Notre-Dame de Paris, St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Barcelona Cathedral and Saint Thomas Church New York City.
