Health Services
The Medical Centre is staffed by a team of qualified Nurses, Paramedics and Health Care Assistants, overseen by the School’s Health Services Manager. Other healthcare professionals such as physiotherapists and a psychologist support the medical team by delivering specialist services.
Staff are on call 24/7, meaning our boarders at St Peter’s can access medical care at any time of the day or night.
The School Medical Officer, Dr Rebecca Field, also visits the School as necessary, but is based very nearby at a practice at 32 Clifton, just across the road from the main school building, and can see pupils at the surgery with two priority appointments available for pupils every day.
Each section of the school has access to a member of the Health Services Team at all times, and there are spaces across the school for rest if pupils are feeling particularly unwell. The team manage pupil medical conditions on a daily basis and deal with minor illness and injury.
The Health Team also oversees the immunisation programme and the health screening for eyesight, hearing, weight and height. They assist with the PSHE curriculum and act as a point of contact on child protection issues when appropriate.
More information about medical care is available on the parents’ portal, including registering boarding pupils with the school doctor, consent to treatment, dental care and specific requirements for overseas pupils.
Mental Health Services
In today’s fast paced world, the importance of mental health and wellbeing cannot be overstated, especially among young individuals navigating through the challenges of academia, social dynamics, and personal growth. At St Peters School York, not only do we focus on academic excellence, but we also place significant emphasis on nurturing the mental health and wellbeing of all students, from ages 2 to 18.
Antonia Clarke, Head of St Peter's 2-8, is the Mental Health Lead with responsibility for our strategic whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing, including promoting an open culture and positive mental health throughout school. She has completed an MA in School Leadership of Mental Health and Wellbeing.
The Mental Health Team is coordinated by Simon Gowland and delivers one-to-one support for pupils of all ages with mental health needs. Simon is our School Counsellor, qualified in psychotherapeutic counselling specialising in children and young people, and is situated in our Wellbeing Hub.
The Well Being Hub which is central to the campus fosters a welcoming and supportive environment where we acknowledge that each student is unique, with their own set of strengths, challenges, and emotional needs. We provide 1:1 counselling sessions during term time and have a wealth of resources available for mental and emotional support.
For pupils in need of wellbeing and mental health support, please contact 'The Wellbeing Hub', or refer a pupil or yourself here: Mental Health Support Referral Form (google.com).
Wellbeing Spaces
Across the school we have places for pupils to go when they are feeling overwhelmed, as well as regular mindfulness practices to help them find calm in stressful moments.
The Wellbeing Treehouse for Reception to Year 3
The Wellbeing Tree House is a safe, calm and comfortable space where children can go if they feel anxious or upset. It has been lit, decorated and furnished as a special place for children, away from the hustle and bustle of the school day. The Tree House is accessed for wellbeing sessions and is resourced with books, games and objects that support wellbeing.
The Wellbeing Space for Year 4 to Year 8
Just next to the library, there is a calm, safe space for pupils that are feeling overwhelmed.
One to one sessions can take place here, or at the Wellbeing Hub.
