Yesterday, 16 Lower Sixth pupils visited York Minster to take part in the Yorkits Big Workshop.
Yorkits is a local community project which makes feminine hygiene kits for girls in developing countries. The Yorkits team and all the volunteers made 70 full kits during the course of the day, along with hundreds of component parts which will be added to more kits. These kits make a difference to women and girls in developing countries.
The volunteers at Yorkits take the kits out to schools, colleges, community groups and both women's refuges and refugee camps across the world. They provide templates and instructions for making further kits and have seed funded schools and communities in Africa and Asia to make their own kits out of local materials. Providing Yorkits in many countries allows girls to attend school like the boys, enable women to trade in the markets every week and not risk losing their livelihoods. The kits provide access to health, hygiene, education and dignity.
Lower Sixth pupils, Mackenzie and Max, said, ‘It is great to see so many people here.’ They both acknowledged how it is ‘difficult enough for women to afford hygiene products in the UK so it is great that we have gathered to make free kits.’
