By 2027, St Peter’s will have two distinct parts of the school; St Peter’s Junior School and St Peter’s Senior School.
The whole school will continue to operate as one, with a more cohesive journey from Nursery to Upper Sixth.
St Peter’s has never stood still, and since its foundation in AD627, has been on a number of locations in York, been structured in a number of formats, and at key points in time has made significant transitions that have made it the wonderful place it is today.
In making the move to a two school structure, our goal is to have the best possible flow of education and experience for pupils and their families across academic, pastoral and co-curricular. Having the school split into three sections has created a number of challenges, while a two school structure presents a number of opportunities, and we are excited by the environment that this will create for our pupils.
“St Peter’s has been in existence for nearly 1400 years and one of the reasons behind our long and successful history is our ability to change, adapt and evolve to the world we live in. We are in a position of strength at the moment, with thriving pupil numbers and a justly deserved reputation for participation and excellence, whether in academics, pastoral care or co-curricular activities. However, the world has changed and the best time to make robust plans for the future is when we are in a position of strength. Whilst our three school model has served us so well over the past decades, I am very excited about the new structure which will give the best possible opportunities to our own pupils and their families, and make the most of our wonderful campus”.

Senior Leadership
As we progress towards a two school structure, Jeremy Walker will continue to be Head Master of the entirety of St Peter's with Andrew Hall, as the Senior Deputy of the Senior School. Phil Hardy will be Head of the Junior School with Antonia Clarke as Senior Deputy of the Junior School.
What will the school look like by 2027?
The change in structure forms a key part of St Peter’s Strategic Development Plan which focuses on delivering educational excellence and future affordability. Several elements of the strategy are already well underway including the launch of the Keys for Life bursary fundraising campaign, a new leadership structure and the opening of the first St Peter’s International School as part of our drive to generate revenue away from school fees.
A key focus of the change is to demonstrably enhance the experience of pupils and their families at St Peter’s. The school has engaged local architects, brown + company, to advise on the best way to repurpose existing facilities on our beautiful 50-acre campus in the heart of York.
Working towards 2027
Work will be taking place over the next few years to move towards the two school structure and to improve our campus for the enjoyment of our pupils and wider community.
Some of the work you will see taking place soon is listed below:
- A new Senior Dining room for September 2024
- A new Health and Mental Health Hub at Burton Cottage for November 2024
- Improvements to the current wall bar gym at 8-13 to include a dance studio

St Peter's Junior School
Educating children from Nursery to the end of Year 6, St Peter’s Junior School will be located on the southern part of the school campus, currently the home of St Peter's 8-13.
Whilst the Junior School will have dedicated spaces for teaching, sports, performance, music, dining and much more, the school will also have full access to shared facilities for St Peter’s School, such as the swimming pool, sports pitches outdoor amenities and specialist facilities, as it does at present.
Under the leadership of Mr Hardy and Senior Leadership team, the school will continue to deliver an internationally recognised, innovative curriculum alongside a huge range of activities and wraparound care.
St Peter’s Junior School will be largely class based with lessons taught by class teachers, complemented by access to specialist teaching and facilities. In Years 1-6 there will be specialist lessons in Music, PE, Games and Languages.
In Years 1-4 the curriculum will be delivered via a thematic model, as in the current model at St Peter's 2-8. In Years 5 and 6 pupils will have the opportunity to learn though enquiry and project learning to give opportunities to develop transferable skills such as creative thinking, problem solving and collaboration.
To reflect this exciting change the campus will be updated with some building improvements starting in Summer 2024.
The front of the school will be re-configured, with a welcoming entrance way. Other parts of the school will be re-clad and re-designed, with a brand-new play area. We will also have a dedicated space for the Nursery, with their own indoor/outdoor play area.

St Peter's Senior School
The Senior School will educate children from Year 7 to the Upper Sixth, located on the upper part of the school campus, sharing some specialist facilities with the Junior School.
All pupils at St Peter’s Senior School will continue to develop a love of learning with an enquiry-led approach. The school will continue to be underpinned by academic challenge within a creative and collaborative environment. As always, we will place equal importance on pupils achieving outstanding academic results alongside discovering their passions and interests through an exciting schedule of academic extension and a huge co-curricular programme
Lessons will be enriched with a variety of wider study, exploration, challenge and trips.
We will also be making some significant changes to the Senior School campus, enabling us to make the best possible use of our resources and invest in the facilities needed to strengthen the school for the future.
We are excited to reveal that by 2027, there will be a brand-new Sixth Form Centre which will have facilities such as a dining room and café, a lecture theatre/ meeting room, study spaces, large indoor social spaces, outdoor social and study spaces, offices, meeting rooms and a Research Hub, the latter being a resource shared with the whole Senior School. Subjects taught only at Sixth Form such as Economics, Business, Politics and History of Art will also be located here.
The Sixth Form Centre will also house the Careers & Higher Education department to allow for close work with applications to universities/careers advice and yet still accessible to other members of the school.

We also hope to create a new mezzanine floor in the Senior School Library allowing us to zone spaces for research, teaching, private and group study, reading for pleasure and relaxation.
