Upper Sixth pupil, Lottie, has received a highly commended certificate for her Woolf Essay in the Newnham College Woolf Essay Prize. Each year, entries are open to all women in Year 12 or equivalent, from any school or country, studying any combination of subjects. The competition is designed to give students an opportunity to think and write about women in literature, history, society and culture, whilst developing their independent study and writing skills. Entries answer one of three questions inspired by Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own.
Keen pupil, Lottie, explored the quote that ‘literature should be androgynous’, by arguing that although this is the ideal, and writing isn’t technically gendered, the complexities of experience which influence our writing are, meaning that writing can never be completely androgynous. Having recently written a play for her EPQ, alongside studying Drama, English Literature and History, it is clear that Lottie has a way with words. She is aspiring to study English Literature at University, and has applied to courses in Cambridge, Edinburgh, St Andrew’s, Glasgow and Manchester.
