Where: St Peter’s School, York, YO30 6AB

In collaboration with the University of York, St Peter's School is delighted to be hosting a face-to-face CPD event and networking opportunity for MFL colleagues at the start of the new academic year. Using expert analysis and practical steps to help all language teachers and leaders approach the new GCSE with confidence; this training brings together MFL practitioners for rich discussion as we develop our practice with the teaching of the new GCSE in French, Spanish and German.

The day will be split into four sessions:

Session 1: Curriculum Design

Working with your SoW, you will analyse and discuss what to change and what to keep at KS3 & 4, to equip students of all abilities with the secure knowledge they need to succeed and the motivation to sustain them through KS4 and beyond. There will be opportunities to share ideas with colleagues about what is already working well in your setting.

Session 2: Practice that makes progress

Rich practice ideas for phonics, vocabulary, and grammar to set students on a path of steadily improving and ever more confident communication in speaking and writing and enhanced understanding in reading and listening.

Session 3: Profiling texts for the revised requirements of the listening and reading

Using the LDP’s Lexical Profiler Tool, you will learn how to profile texts for reading and listening purposes, considering the requirements of the new specifications. This will draw on vocabulary lists from AQA and Edexcel and lead to greater confidence in designing and adapting your own texts.

The event will be facilitated by Victoria Hobson and Jenny Hopper from the University of York's Language Driven Pedagogy team. The content of the session is based on the work done by the successful partnership between The Cam Academy Trust (Dr Rachel Hawkes) and the University of York (Prof. Emma Marsden). This collaboration continues to bring together research and practice to support language curriculum design and pedagogy for foreign language education in schools in England. Since 2019, the team has delivered CPD to thousands of teachers and created over 1,500 freely available resources (now with newly adapted versions), informing both the existing and future work of the Oak National Academy.

Session 4: Teacher round table

Reflecting on what we have learned from the day, this is an opportunity for delegates to discuss best practice, collaborate and share ideas. This could also include sharing of resources.
