Tuesday night saw the return of the annual inter-house STEM challenge. Houses were invited to organise a team of 4 pupils with a mix of year groups to take part. Groups were allowed time to research and plan and were given 1 hour on the day to complete the challenge.
This year’s theme was 'Bridges'. Teams had to construct a free standing, single-span bridge for a hotwheels car, using wooden splints. The teams' resources were limited, and points were scored for both the length and strength of the bridge.
The solutions that the pupils came up with were very innovative, and showed what a resourceful pupil body we have at St Peter’s. The Manor and Linton both employed ancient basket weaving techniques in their construction. Arched bridges proved to be a popular design choice for teams such as Temple and Clifton, although they proved to be technical and time-consuming produce and consequently the bridges were not as long as others. The most successful teams adopted a simpler, reinforced beam design.
Congratulations to all the teams who really entered into the spirit of the competition on Tuesday evening. In third place were Linton, second place School House and in First place, outright winners were Queens. They are awarded the traditional trophy for this competition, which dates back to the days of the Great Egg Race.
