It’s clear that the long-lasting effects of the pandemic have affected the traditional opportunities open to young people across the UK, but that has not stopped four of our Upper Sixth pupils, Megan, Charley, Millie and Will from completing their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

They have adapted their activities over the last two years, and worked incredibly hard to find opportunities to volunteer and attend residential courses, helping them to complete the five elements of the Gold Award.

Megan met with Ukranian pupils online to help them with their spoken English, and she worked at a residential camp for people with special needs. Millie worked towards a Royal Yachting Association qualification as the Residential element of her award and Will took part in a Youth Conservation Project in the North Yorkshire Moors. Charley spent many hours keeping her village clear of litter as the volunteering part of her award.

All four started their Bronze award in Third Form, and have now completed all three levels of the award through to Gold.

Pupils at St Peter’s school are supported by a dedicated team of staff to complete their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards by the time they leave at the end of their sixth form, although it is requires a great deal of effort on the part of the individual.

The DofE enables young people to broaden their horizons and develop skills and attributes such as self-management, team working, confidence and a positive attitude to work; all of which are increasingly important to excelling at higher education and in jobs.

“I am incredibly proud of what these four young people have achieved through the DofE award scheme, and I hope it encourages others to follow in their path.” - Mr Whitehouse.
