The 1st XI played in the HMC T20 North East Finals Day at York Sports Club on the last Friday of half term. Our semi-final was against Ampleforth; after a strong start batting first, the XI lost their way in the middle overs, setting Ampleforth 118 to win. Some tight bowling and good fielding placements made the chase hard for Ampleforth – and some excellent bowling from Will and Elias closed out a tight and tense game with the XI winning by 4 runs.
The final against Worksop College (a repeat of the last five summers at this stage of the competition) saw the XI asked to field first. Some powerful batting by the Worksop top order got them off to a flying start but with a couple of great catches, some fine bowling and a wonderful team spirit; taking the total to 132 from their 20 overs. In reply, the XI never really got going. Enter Elias…a measured innings that accelerated very quickly with ball-striking abilities matched by some of the top players in first-class cricket. Still needing 38 off 18 balls, Elias continued to smite the ball to all parts, heroically supported by Freddie playing a selfless inning, rotating the strike, running hard and using all his tactical nouse to get Elias all the strike he could. 24 was needed off 12 balls, 14 off the final over, 4, 1, 1, 2, the 5th ball was a dot, 6 off the last ball was needed to win…This must be one of the most exciting finishes to a game of cricket I have ever witnessed, and I am so proud of all the boys for their ever-developing selfless characters on a cricket field.
St Peter’s now play in the North of England Final (amongst the last 8 in country) against either Sedbergh or Mysercough College. Watch this space.
One of the most exciting finishes to a game of cricket I have ever witnessed!
