In continuation of the public lecture series in partnership with York Literature Festival and Fox Lane Books, author Rick Broadbent visited St Peter’s to discuss his ‘biography of Yorkshire’.
In conversation with our Head of Politics' Ben Fuller, exiled Yorkshireman Rick shared stories about his own experience of his native county. After moving South as a teenager, Rick pondered on the meaning of identity, and was met with laughs when he asked the audience, ‘Does it really matter if you’re from Yorkshire?’
This question led him to find out why people are so proud to be from Yorkshire and whether there is anywhere else like it in the UK. He discussed the glamour and grit, the stereotypes and reality, from the Knaresborough bed race to the 1984 Miner’s Strikes. His own favourite parts of God’s own county include Elland Road and The Strid, but he can understand how the stunning architecture of York Minster and the classy lunches of Harrogate can lure visitors in.
The audience, largely Yorkshire natives, engaged in conversation with Rick following the talk. They discussed their own interpretation of their Yorkshire identity. Now Then incorporates social history, heartfelt memoirs and interviews with guests such as the Archbishop of York. No stone is left unturned as Broadbent examines the truth about Yorkshire’s history, from the wider county to its individuals.
Rick’s book can be found here.
