Historic Building Mythbusting with Dr James Wright
Go to any ancient building and there will be interesting, exciting, and romantic stories presented to the visitor. They are commonly believed and widely repeated – but are they really true? These stories include those of secret passages linking ancient buildings, spiral staircases in castles giving advantage to right-handed defenders, ship timbers used in the construction of buildings on land, blocked doors in churches which are thought to keep the Devil out and claims to be the oldest pub in the country.
Award winning buildings archaeologist James Wright will explain the development of such myths and investigate the underlying truths behind them. Sometimes the realities hiding behind the stories are even more interesting, romantic, and exciting than the myth itself… His book Historic Building Mythbusting is newly published.

Iain Dale: Dictators
Joined by a panel of the book's contributors:
Yasmin Alibhai-Brown – writer & columnist for the I & Evening Standard
Adam Boulton – journalist & broadcaster, formerly editor-at-large at Sky News
Justin Hill – award winning novelist
Alex Puffette – writer & author
With the world moving more and more in favour of authoritarian rule, this seems the right moment to seek warnings, and lessons, from history. Iain Dale, with his panel will be here to talk about The Dictators, 64 Dictators, 64 Warnings from History.
Iain & the panel will explore how these tyrants, autocrats and despots seized power and exercised it. And ask how did they lose it? Very few dictators die peacefully in their own beds! Are there specific character traits that all dictators share? What can we learn from them in order to spot the warning signs in future? Through the spectrum of a wide variety of dictators in different parts of the world and throughout history, themes and patterns inevitably emerge. Iain Dale is an award-winning broadcaster and presenter of the Evening Show on LBC Radio. He is the author/editor of more than 30 books and co-host of the "For the Many" podcast and the Iain Dale Book Club podcast.
