On Monday 27th parents of children in St Peter’s 8-13 welcomed the start to the festive season with the Santa Claus is coming to town concert. After an incredible term of music making, the pupils were well prepared and full of enthusiasm to show off their hard work in their ensembles.

The evening started with a rousing rendition of Santa Claus is comin’ to town by the Jukebox Choir, followed by the Junior Wind ensemble who played Shepherd’s Farewell by Berliox. Next, we had the Senior String Ensemble who played Pastoral Symphony by Handel, the Junior Brass band played Winter Wonderland by Bernard, and the Senior Cello Ensemble who played In the Bleak Midwinter by Darke, arr Brewer.

Due to a pupil illness, the Senior Wind Ensemble were a flutist down, so luckily our talented Head of Music at 8-13 was able to step in at the last minute to play the part in Waltz of the Flowers by Tchaikovsky. They did an amazing job at playing a piece meant for a 70 strong ensemble with just 5 people!

The Mini-Jazz Band then took to the stage for (Santa’s) Bag’s Groove by Milt Jackson, with solos from the saxophonists, trumpeters, trombonist, and clarinettists. We then had the Sinfonietta playing Little Drummer Boy, and the children laughed at the parent’s faces when Mrs Craven asked for the audience’s participation to sing the words! All did a brilliant job, and the Shepherd Hall was soon filled with the sound of singing.

The Piano Trio played The First Nowell beautifully, and then as they switched to their second piece, donned some festive headwear which they wore throughout Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Finally, we filled the stage for the last ensemble of the evening, as we had the Sinfonia playing Sleigh Ride by Leopold Mozart, Trepak by Tchaikovsky and Walking in a Winter Wonderland by Bernard.

If you enjoyed the concert, we have many more events this term for music. Please feel free to attend any of the below:
