St Peter's 2-8 Academics

Year 2 have concluded their time learning about the Romans with a celebratory Roman Banquet. The children and staff dressed in Roman costumes, fastened with brooch pins which they made in art. They sang a number of Roman songs, including their new favourite song ‘Just Like a Roman’.

Year 2 have been investigating food groups and comparing the Roman diet to ours in 2021. In preparation for the feast, our pupils followed a recipe to make their own Roman honey biscuits. They also tasted other exquisite Roman food. On the menu were olives, cheese, grapes, pita breads, honey, dates, figs and olive oil and to wash it down was a delicious red wine (blackcurrant juice)... but no roasted dormice or flamingo tongues! The children loved trying new foods and dipping them all in honey!

Year 2 have loved learning about the history of York this term:

  • ‘I loved baking biscuits and eating them at the feast..’ - Hugo
  • ‘I liked learning about Roman clothing’ - Matilda
  • ‘I liked going to the Minster, to learn about where Roman York began. There was beautiful stained glass there!’ - India
  • ‘I loved making Roman mosaics out of dried beans!’ - Owen

A huge thank you to Mrs Hall, Miss Platts and Miss Jeffrey for preparing such a wonderful learning experience for the children. They all were engrossed in their learning and clearly learned a tremendous amount about how the Romans lived in the city of York (Eborcarum).
