This week, eight of our pupils will be sitting the Arkwright Aptitude Exam to become an Engineering Scholar – the most candidates we have seen at St Peter’s. Fifth Form pupils Alexa, Anton, Bertie, Florence, Taras, Tristan, Bob and Joss are taking part.
Each year, schools tend to submit up to four applicants a year, and are encouraged to identify those with the best chance of success. Only when a school has an outstanding year group will it submit more than four.
For 30 years, Arkwright has identified, inspired and nurtured future leaders in engineering, computing and technical design. Approximately 37% of scholarships go to female pupils. 1391 hard-working students applied in 2023, with 622 reaching the final interview stage. This year, we have a scholar in the Lower Sixth, Tristan, and other recent scholars include Will and Scarlett. The Smallpiece Trust work hard to break down the barriers and misconceptions preventing young people, girls and underrepresented groups from engaging with engineering.
Recently, two of our Arkwright Scholars have gone on to achieve fantastic things at a higher education level. Martha (OP 2023) is studying engineering at Cambridge, having been Head of School in her final year. Georgina (OP 2019) recently graduated with a first-class Mechanical Engineering degree from Loughborough University and won undergraduate Female Engineer of the Year in 2021. She is now working as an Operations Graduate for a consultancy firm outside of Oxford.
We wish this year’s applicants the best of luck!
Update on 07/03/2024 Half of our applicants have made it through to interview stage, and we wish them to best of luck!
