Do you hear the people sing? St Peter's School presents Les Misérables

Pupils at St Peter’s School, York, have returned to the stage this term with a mesmerising adaptation of Les Misérables. 

The Music and Drama Departments at St Peter’s School have joined forces to produce the musical extravaganza which involves over 50 pupils, including 34 cast members on stage, 16 crew backstage and 5 musicians in the band. 

Les Misérables has been performed over three nights from Wednesday 1 December to Friday 3 December in the school’s Memorial Hall to a sell-out crowd of 200 people per night.  

The pupils have spent over 50 hours rehearsing for the production at school since Tuesday 14 September in preparation for the performances this week. 

Jeremy Walker, Head Master of St Peter’s School, said: “It was a privilege to attend the opening night of Les Misérables on Wednesday. The performance was an absolute triumph! Huge congratulations and thanks to the cast, musicians, tech and backstage crew on a brilliant production. Do you hear the people sing? You sure do!” 

Paul Miles-Kingston, Director of Music at St Peter’s School, said: “A big thank you to everyone involved with Les Misérables. It is a fantastic piece but also a technical showcase on so many levels and it is a great credit to all the pupils and staff involved that we have been able to put such a strong production together.” 

The last major production at St Peter’s School was The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, performed in December 2019. Unfortunately, the school production was cancelled last year due to Covid restrictions, so it has been wonderful to have the opportunity to showcase the pupils’ remarkable talents once again this year.
