On Friday 21 June, our Fourth Form Spanish pupils were treated to a Spanish Cultural Evening. The event got off to a great start as pupils socialised with churros and chocolate!
This was soon followed by a talk by three Old Peterites, namely, Lottie McKelvie (Spanish and Arabic studies at the University of Durham), James Hanson (French and Linguistics graduate from the University of Oxford) and Tim Burgess (German and Russian at the University of St Andrews).
The OPs spoke candidly about their varied and valuable experiences of studying languages at university. They also shared their insights on their own study and work opportunities abroad, from Germany to Jordan and Paris. They stressed the importance of communication and analytical skills in the modern world and explained to our pupils how well regarded those with languages are by the business community.
The evening then picked up pace in a literal sense with Laucinda Roberts' salsa lesson, putting pupils' sense of rhythm to the test. Laucinda is a professional with 35 years of dance teaching and performance experience and has previously been invited to teach dance classes at St Peter's.
The evening concluded with tapas which tasted as incredible as it looked. A bonanza of colours and flavours graced the table, including a delightful spread of tortilla, chorizo, aceitunas (olives), jamón serrano and queso Manchego con dulce de membrillo (quince paste), patatas bravas, croquetas and pimientos del piquillo (red mini peppers). We would like to say a big thank you to our catering team and in particular to Calvin and Craig for their enthusiasm and culinary talents!
