The Chapel Choir travelled to Durham Cathedral on Monday to sing Evensong. This is always a special visit in one of the most beautiful and important cathedrals in the country and was well supported by parents, OPs and staff.
The choir sang the Evening canticles to a setting by Charles Wood, which allowed their sound to open out, with some exciting moments in the more dramatic passages. The psalm setting was more reflective with some descriptive text to communicate. The anthem ‘Great Lord of Lords’ by Richard Lloyd was an appropriate choice with the composer being a former Director of Music at the cathedral. This piece is written in quite a grand, ceremonial style which was well captured by the choir with some expansive and nicely shaped phrases.
This was a very successful service overall and received much praise from the Dean of Durham and the clergy present. We hope to return in two years’ time.
