Miss Downes has awarded merits to several J4 Latin pupils to celebrate their recent work.
The pupils translated a short scene of the play ‘In Basilica’ in class and were asked to creatively show their understanding of the piece. The story, which is featured in the Cambridge Latin Course textbook, is about the main character taking a man to court over an unreturned loan.
Ordinarily the pupils would make masks and act out their stories in groups in a lesson. However, due to social distancing restrictions the pupils were given a period of two weeks to submit their prep work. They were asked to complete a creative translation of the story and were given freedom to interpret the brief.
The pupils edited and recorded their videos at home via Zoom or Teams, with innovative results.
Sam and Charles made a video in full toga costume with the background edited to show them in a lawcourt, whilst Seb and Alfred recorded the video with various costume changes to represent each of the characters.
Imi, Beatric, Izzy, Emma and Roisin recorded their video in Latin with English subtitles, whilst Elliotte, Heidi and Lexi produced a video with costumes and an appearance from Heidi’s dog, which they managed to record ‘speaking’ using an app to edit the video.
Other pupils created cartoons and storyboards, including Rory, Max, Pietro, Emma and Lizzy, whilst Anna, Helena and Sephie created a fun video.
Miss Downes said: “I was completely bowled over by the creativity and teamwork that the pupils displayed. It is a lovely display of creativity and teamwork from Year 7 pupils and it is great to see them adapting to different ways of working in lockdown.”
