On Wednesday morning, 3 local schools - St Lawrence's CE primary School, Dringhouses Primary and of course, St Peter's School, battled it out for the chance to stand out at the St Peter's Year 4 and Year 5 maths competition.
The competition was fun yet fierce with Dringhouses Primary as joint winners. The young mathematicians enjoyed the morning battling through numerous maths problems and puzzles, followed by a relay where speed and thinking agility were paramount for gaining points for their teams.
One pupil remarked "We really enjoyed the relay because it was fast". Another said, "With the crossnumber puzzle we had to make sure that all the answers fitted together."
All the young mathematicians loved the collaborative aspect of the morning. "Their resilience was definitely put to the test" remarked Miss Sally-Jane Fell, event co-ordinator and KS2 lead at St Peter's 8-13. There was even a joke shared shared on the Dringhouses poster, "What did the cuboid say when he won? I won fair and square."
Winners of the poster competition were St Peter's - Whales. The judge, Mr David Spencer of St Peter's 13-18 maths department, loved the maths included on the 3-d shape poster, but was also impressed with the presentation and interactive nature of the poster which even had light up 3-d shapes!
Another insightful comment came from St Lawrences teacher who said, "Myself and 4 children from St Lawrences CE primary School attended the maths competition where we felt very welcome upon arrival. Overall it was a great morning.". St Lawrences pupil Joe also added: "It was really fun, a little complicated, but we worked together as a team."
Thank you to Miss Fell for organising, and to all the schools that joined us for making it a fun day for the pupils.
