On Thursday J4 pupils took part in a zoom event organised by the Holocaust Education Trust to mark the 86th anniversary of Kristallnacht. This tied in with the work they have been doing in RS and English on the Holocaust and the book 'Once'. They listened to the testimony of Eve Kugler BEM who was a first-hand witness of Kristallnacht and former Jewish child refugee, having fled Nazi persecution during the Second World War. It was a real privilege to hear Eve's story and her testimony will remain a powerful reminder of the horrors so many experienced. We are grateful to the Holocaust Educational Trust for co-ordinating the event and we hope that by hearing Eve’s testimony, it will encourage our students to learn from the lessons of the Holocaust and make a positive difference in their own lives.
Siena in J4 said it was really interesting to hear from someone who was actually there to experience the Holocaust, Eliza was really pleased that Eve was still alive to share her story, Evie liked how Eve showed family pictures and talked about her personal life and Hannah said it was very interesting to hear first hand evidence of what happened.
Karen Pollock CBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust said: “The Holocaust Educational Trust educates and engages students from across the UK, from all communities about the Holocaust and there can be no better way than through the first-hand testimony of a survivor. Eve’s story is one of tremendous courage during horrific circumstances and by hearing her testimony, students will have the opportunity to learn where antisemitism and hatred can ultimately lead. “At the Trust, we impart the history of the Holocaust to young people, to ensure that we honour the memory of those whose lives were lost and take forward the lessons taught by those who survived.”
Thank you to Helen Sayles for the information about the session.
