St Peter's 13-18 Music

St Peter’s School Upper Sixth Chapel Choir sang Evensong at York Minster this week.

The service, which was open to the public, was held at York Minster on Monday 7 December and was the first time that parents have been able to see their children singing as part of the choir ‘in real life’ since March.

The Choir, which includes 16 pupils from St Peter’s, sang some well-known repertoire including Stanford in B flat and Wood’s O thou, the central orb. They were accompanied by Keith Wright, the Assistant Director of Music at St Peter’s 13-18.

Members of the congregation were asked to wear masks, enter track and trace details and maintain social distancing during the service.

Paul Miles-Kingston, Director of Music at St Peter’s 13-18, said: “A significant part of our music programme at St Peter’s usually involves pupils participating in events at York Minster, upholding the strong links and long history between the Minster and St Peter’s School. Unfortunately it hasn’t been possible to run our regular music programme this year, so it was wonderful to have the opportunity to sing Evensong at York Minster before the end of term.”

Jeremy Walker, Head Master of St Peter’s School, said: “I hugely enjoyed hearing the Upper Sixth Chapel Choir sing Evensong in York Minster on Monday. We are immensely grateful to York Minster for giving our pupils the opportunity to perform in such a magnificent space and I am sure it will be a memorable experience for them all. In a year in which we have become the Choir School for the Minster, it was a wonderful expression of our close relationship and partnership.”
