Pupils at 2-8 are taking on the big responsibility of looking after broods of ducklings for the next week in their classrooms. The children are learning about conservation and the preservation of poultry breeds.
This is the second year that Year 2 have had duckling eggs to care for. The eggs are sourced from respectable small-scale poultry breeders and conservationists who support children's education. The ducklings were delivered as eggs about to hatch with an incubator, brooder and pen. Pupils have learnt about hibernation, habitats and eggs this term, so this is a great way to put their learning into action.
The children have watched the eggs hatch and will now nurture them and watch them grow, making sure to keep them safe. The children are making life cycle posters, writing ‘duckling journals’ and creating lots of art. In a few days, the children will be able to take on more responsibility and will be able to see them play in water!
Mrs Hall:
It’s a wonderful learning experience for our children, who have been following a nature based theme, ‘Gnomes on the Roam’ all term. It is also a lovely joyful thing to welcome the children back into school with after 8 weeks of online learning.
