Arthur, a pupil at St Peter’s 8-13 and a York Minster chorister, has reached the semi-finals of the highly prestigious BBC Young Chorister of the Year competition.
Arthur joined York Minster Choir as a chorister in 2017 and has been singing with the choir for four years. He has been a pupil at St Peter’s School since September 2020, when the school became the Choir School for York Minster.
Arthur entered the Young Chorister of the Year competition earlier this year by recording his entry at home and submitting it to the BBC using an online application form.
From all the entries received, ten young singers (five girls and five boys) were chosen to sing at the televised semi-finals in front of a panel of judges.
Arthur and four other boys will perform in the boys’ semi-final this Sunday 28 November on BBC One, broadcast from Salisbury Cathedral.
Arthur said: “I really enjoyed taking part in this competition, although I was quite nervous to be singing in front of lots of TV cameras! Salisbury Cathedral was beautiful and it was fun to meet all the other choristers and share the experience with them. I also enjoyed meeting presenter and former chorister Aled Jones – having seen him on TV before, it was very surreal talking to him!”
Arthur’s Dad Paul Gameson, who is a singing teacher at St Peter’s School and a Songman at York Minster, said: “Arthur’s mum and I are really proud of his tremendous achievement reaching the semi-finals, as is his younger brother, Edwin.”
The Young Chorister of the Year competition is open to singers aged 10-16 from across the UK who love to sing sacred music, either by themselves or as part of a choir. Organised by Songs of Praise and Radio 2, the competition aims to celebrate the contribution made by young people to choirs and music groups across the UK.
