Academics

St Peter’s pupils were delighted today to receive outstanding A Level results. After more than two years of disruption and lockdowns, this success was particularly well deserved, and the school is very proud of the achievements of all pupils, who have all shown resilience and commitment over a challenging period.

88% of results were awarded at A* to B, a third of all grades were at A* (with 65% at A* to A). 20 pupils achieved 3 or more A* grades and 11 pupils achieved four A Levels at A*/A.

There have also been some outstanding individual performances with most pupils achieving their first-choice destinations.

Pupils who achieved an amazing 4 A*s include Natasha, a boarder since Third Form and Head of House in The Rise, who has secured a place to read Sociology and Politics at University of Edinburgh. Ben is heading to University of Warwick to read Engineering and Josh will go to the University of St Andrews to study German and Spanish. Rachael will continue to delight audiences with her talents at the Royal Northern College of Music.

Twins Hugo and Rory achieved 6 A*s and an A between them and head to University of Cambridge (Mathematics) and University of Exeter (Combined Honours) respectively. Hugo’s Maths success is no surprise as he recently came joint tenth in the country in the British Mathematical Olympiad and was awarded a distinction. His brother Rory won the Alan Mak Politics prize at the end of the Upper Sixth.

Charlotte who achieved 3 A*s and an A will start at Durham University to study Natural Sciences in the autumn and has shared her wonderful talents as a musician in school, playing in a variety of ensembles and as a soloist. Tim who will read Mathematics at University of Edinburgh also achieved 3 A*s and an A.

Eleanor (Medicine) and Joe (Economics & Management) both going to the University of Bristol, were amongst pupils proud to receive three A*s each, along with Diana (University of St. Andrews to study History). As well as being a full boarder Diana was also Head of House and one of the Captains of the Debating Society.

William also received 3 A*s and heads off to Durham University. He fully embraced life at St Peter’s on many levels as a full boarder, Deputy Head of School, playing the lead in the school production of Les Misérables and presenter of a school film.

Violinist and leader of the orchestra Wilf, who achieved 3 A*s, is heading to the University of Nottingham to study Mathematics and Economics.

Local pupils who joined St Peter’s in the Sixth Form also achieved excellent results. They include Dora whose A*A*B will see her heading off to study Architecture at UCL, and Lucy whose A*AA sees her progress to study Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham. Theo’s impressive 3 A*s and an A earned him a place to read Physics at University of Exeter.

Will has secured a place to read History at  University of Edinburgh following his 3 A*s. Wolfe, who was awarded 3 A*s will study Classics at University of Oxford. A keen Rugby player, Wolfe taught himself Greek during the first lockdown before commencing A Level Greek in the Lower Sixth and has volunteered, working with children at a local school.

Alongside A Levels, many pupils have also completed the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) whilst others have continued working towards their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards, music and LAMDA grades and competing at a high level in many sports.

Almost all pupils have been placed at their first-choice with most going to Russell Group universities including Oxford, Cambridge and other leading institutions such as Durham and UCL. Other leavers are heading overseas, such as Sophie (2 As and an A*) who will be going to university in Ireland. Head of School, Toby, who also achieved 2 As and an A* will finesse the swimming skills mastered in the St Peter’s pool alongside his studies when he takes up a place  at a leading college in the USA.

Old Peterite pupils who took a gap year also had successes and will be taking up their places at Oxford and other Russell Group universities.

University subjects chosen range from Architecture to Zoology with courses including Ancient History, Creative Writing, Dentistry and Psychology in between. Our teaching staff and Education and Careers Department are on hand on results day and beyond to advise with next steps and choices on the day.

Jeremy Walker, Head Master says:

“I congratulate all of our fantastic Upper Sixth pupils today. This outstanding set of results has been achieved over a challenging period where our pupils’ collective resilience and positivity has kept them focused. Today’s academic rewards are a direct and thoroughly deserved result, and I wish them all the best when they set off to an excellent set of destinations.

Pupils applied themselves to the full, navigating the changes from online back to traditional learning methods, and exams. Uncertainty about the changing A Level system from year to year has not held them back, and I am delighted to celebrate their results with them and their families.

Importantly, pupils have combined their academic studies with a vast range of co-curricular interests, achieving successes across sport, music, drama, journalism, debating and so much more. The skills and interests they have developed here at St Peter’s will provide a solid foundation for confident and fulfilling lives after school, making positive changes in the world.

Academic results are, of course, important but we are equally proud of the values Upper Sixth pupils have developed: compassion, endurance, and optimism for the future. It has been wonderful to observe the start of lifelong friendships, and we look forward to welcoming pupils back to hear of their many successes as our part of our supportive alumni, the Old Peterites.

I thank parents who have supported us in recent years, and trusted us to guide their children, and empower them to be the best version of themselves.

I also want to pay tribute to the dedicated staff at St Peter’s School who work tirelessly to nurture and inspire our pupils. Our teachers continue to provide inspirational teaching and unwavering support, enabling them to fulfil their true potential, now and in the future.”
