This week we have been feeling very Christmassy, as the advent season begins. Pupils across the school have been preparing to share their performances with parents and guardians, and have been enjoying many festive activities.
The School Council at St Peter’s 2-8 have had a wonderful week with two opportunities to visit York Minster!
On Thursday they took part in the Christmas tree decorating festival, where they took handmade decorations made by pupils across 2-8 and carefully hung them on our very own tree within the York Minster. The decorations this year are paper folded angels and stick Christmas trees which were chosen for the children to learn new skills and to understand the need to re-use materials.
The paper folding for the angels requires real concentration and the Christmas trees used materials foraged at Forest School which were made to look beautiful by the pupils and looked perfect hanging on the Christmas tree. The School Council were respectful and very well behaved throughout the trip, and were very excited and proud to see their hand-made decorations in The York Minster!
On Friday they were lucky enough to go to the York Minster again, with some more pupils accompanying them, to take part in the “raising of the wreath”. This is a wonderful moment for the children, as they gather to help the York Minster team add the advent candles and then lift the stunningly huge Advent Wreath as if by magic to hang above their heads! Children took turns to add the candles in groups (which were taller than most of them!), before calling “Up, up, up!” as the wreath was hoisted into place.
We can’t wait for the performances next week, as the festive season gets into full swing!
