We are delighted to share that Old Peterite Douglas Goode (1949) has put up a toposcope, on Pinhaw Beacon in memory of all who died of Covid-19 and to recognise all NHS staff and care workers for their unselfish dedication during the pandemic.
A toposcope is a kind of graphic display erected at viewing points, hills, mountains or other high places which indicates the direction, and usually the distance, to notable landscape features which can be seen from that point
The toposcope is located at Pinhaw Beacon, Grid Ref. SD 944 472, on the Pennine Way, 4 km SW of Carleton near Skipton, 1 km up (SE) a rough track from the Colne road out of Carleton, where there is parking at Grid Ref. SD 940 473.
Douglas has shared with us that he has arranged for two of the medical staff who worked on the Covid wards at Airedale Hospital to officially ‘unveil’ the toposcope on Saturday, 31st July, at 11 am. There will be a celebratory drink and a collection for the ‘staff wellbeing fund’, the Charity that supports staff social activities at Airedale NHS Hospital. After the unveiling Douglas will lead a short walk (4½ km), if the weather is fine, round Elslack Moor visiting Robert Wilson’s Gravestone.
Robert Wilson was a chief beacon guard who sadly died in severe weather during the winter of 1804-05 when he went to replenish provisions, and lost his way.
