St Peter's 2-8 Events

At St Peter's 2-8, each class have elected two children to become School Councillors and they all meet on a weekly basis. This group is facilitated by Mrs Franey who provides a drink and biscuits.

Through this group, the School Council have set the following objectives:

  • The School Council will work together to make positive changes in our school and the world around us.
  • They will carry ideas from their peers in their class.
  • The pupil's voice matters because we are the voices of the future.

Topics of discussion include how they can raise awareness about global warming and climate change, the dining experience at St Peter’s 2-8, and care and use of playground equipment at school.

Last week the School Council and Mrs Franey invited The Rt Hon the Lord Mayor of York and Lady Mayoress to visit St Peter’s 2-8 to take part in our School Council. The Lord Mayor answered questions from the children and explained his work in the City of York.

We discovered that there are quite a few similarities between our roles and how we were elected by our class to help make positive changes in our school and the Lord Mayor's role. We learnt that the only cities that have a Right Honourable Lord Mayor are York and London. We also found out where the couple live and that they can get out onto the roof of The Mansion House and see an amazing view of the city. They, like us, help York to be the best place it can be for residents and visitors. Both the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress said how much they had enjoyed their visit and thanked the Council for inviting them. The Lord Mayor found the children to be "very bright and engaging".

Our huge thanks to The Rt Hon the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress for giving up their time to visit school and we hope they enjoyed their visit as much as we enjoyed them being at school.
