On Monday our school council at St Peter's 2-8 had their first meeting of the term and were awarded their badges by Mr Hardy.
At the beginning of every term, pupils stand for election and everyone in the class gets to vote for 2 representatives for their class. This includes all pupils from Year 1 to Year 3, so we have 18 representatives in total! The group meets once a week to discuss items relevant to the school and the world around them, trying to care for both and make positive changes, carrying ideas forward from the classes.
Involvement in the school council helps the children feel empowered and that they have the ability to make a change. It develops confidence and encourages the children to take responsibility as well as learning about democracy.
Last year the school council helped to raise the wreath at York Minster and welcomed the Lord Mayor to one of their school council meetings!
