As we all adjust to the changes that 2020 has brought, it has been wonderful to hear from members of the Old Peterite Community, who are reaching out to help support others in these challenging times. Colin Lang (The Manor 1968-1971) has been in touch to tell us about the support, he and his wife Christine have given their local Primary School in Brandon, Suffolk.
“Way back in July, after watching a BBC News article, about the number of children unable to keep up with their school work because of lack of computers, we decided that we could help.
We had previous contact with Forest Academy in Brandon, and donated a few books. So we contacted them to ask about donating Tablets or iPads. As the discussion went on it became apparent that iPads were preferable, as they worked better with the modern school Apps. Eventually, we managed to get the number needed out of the Head Teacher ..... 40!!
After doing some sums we decided that we would help them by donating enough funds to purchase 22. A couple of days later we delivered a cheque to the very grateful Deputy Head, Samantha Gough. Stunned and shocked would be a good description of her reaction on opening the envelope!
So hopefully, over the course of this Term, 22 of the less fortunate pupils will be benefiting from the new equipment. The ipads belong to the school, and are given to the pupils on loan for the duration.”
Colin and Christine were interviewed on BBC Radio Suffolk last week, and they hope as a result of sharing their story, others will help fund the remaining 18 ipads needed to help support the School.
