St Peter's 8-13 Events

Pupils and staff at St Peter’s School joined together virtually on Thursday 4 March to celebrate World Book Day.

From 11.20am until 11.40am, the whole school community including 1,400 staff and pupils turned away from their screens to read for 20 minutes.

Pupils of all ages have also engaged with World Book Day events and activities at home. At St Peter’s 2-8, children enjoyed story-telling sessions, quizzes and an ‘extreme reading’ challenge. They dressed up as their favourite characters from a book on World Book Day, inspired by the theme ‘Reuse, Recycle and Create’ and showcased their imaginative costumes with a Zoom fashion show during Thursday’s assembly.

At St Peter’s 8-13, pupils participated in a mystery reader competition for World Book Day. Staff recorded themselves reading the blurb of books and pupils were challenged to guess the books and the readers. The new librarian at St Peter’s 8-13 Miss MacDonald also created a fabulous online resource for World Book Day, including book suggestions, free audio books and even a video demonstration of how to make your own mini book.

Meanwhile, at St Peter’s 13-18, librarian Mrs Wong shared book suggestions, short stories, audiobooks and a series of videos to help pupils get the most out of World Book Day, whilst teaching staff made their own book recommendations to inspire the pupils.

Finally, teaching and support staff created a ‘story time’ video for the pupils, reading extracts from their favourite books. Books ranged from Brave New World, chosen by Head Master Jeremy Walker, to Catch 22, chosen by English Teacher Miss Edgar. For younger pupils, staff recorded a number of family favourites such as The Gruffalo’s Child and Guess How Much I Love You.

Mr Jeremy Walker, Head Master of St Peter’s School, said: “World Book Day is a great opportunity to remind ourselves of the magical value of books and the printed word.  Some time away from screens and the opportunity to have fun and be inspired has made this a wonderful event at St Peter’s and my thanks go to all involved.”
