Community co-curricular

On Wednesday, our St Peter’s 8-13 Team took part in the Modeshift Campaign Junction event. They have been meeting weekly to discuss the project, and were looking forward to presenting their ideas forward in the hope of securing funding for their campaign.

In total, 5 ATA (Active Travel Ambassadors) schools presented their fantastic ideas on how to encourage more of their peers to get to school in a more active and eco-friendly way. We welcomed St Augustines, Norton College, Selby High and Applefields to the event.

There was also a fantastic panel of experts who decided on funding, including Emily Cherry - CEO The Bikeability Trust, Jessie Davidson - Project Coordinator, Walk to School Outreach, Living Streets and Richard Isaac - Regional Community and Sustainability Manager, Northern Railways.

St Peter’s had the youngest team by far, and received excellent feedback from the judges. They proposed initiative such as a cycle club, which would provide training, breakfast for walkers and cyclists, a recognition scheme for those who choose active travel and rewards for Houses and pupils who do significant active travel. They had carefully considered different modes of transport and their audience, including not just pupils, but parents and teachers, too.

They were awarded £210 to fund their campaign further.

When asked to give quotes about the event, our ambassadors described it as a “Wonderful, excitable experience” in which “we worked together!” They wanted to “change young people’s minds” about active travel, and admitted that they were “all nervous but it was fun.” They “spent lots of time practising and “tried our very best.”

The children said that Mr Mason, our St Peter’s Health Services Manager (whose job includes the school travel plan) and organiser of the event was a good director, and the Modeshift team thanked Ashley for his work with organising and hosting the event.
